Written by David Leddy Music by Pippa Murphy
Dr Roberts' Magic Bus, Edinburgh Fringe Festival an Escalator East To Edinburgh commission 4 - 26 August 2006
Reekie is the third part of the Auricula Series of audio performances. It involves following a map around the lesser-known nooks and crannies of Edinburgh as you listen to headphones that you collect from the box office at East To Edinburgh’s Routemaster bus. Exploring the high cultural price that Edinburgh pays for tourism, Reekie looks at the philosophy of travel, uses Edinburgh bus numbers for mathematical equations and offers remembrance of Rosa Parks’ bus boycott. The listener hears a series of sham interviews about people’s worst Edinburgh festival experiences develop into a more detailed narrative which is altogether darker, drawing in sex tourism and bonded labour in Scottish brothels. The piece combines both abstract and narrative text, juxtaposed with an electro-acoustic composition using noises of vibration recorded on the Routemaster itself.
