Written and performed by David Leddy Directed by Kate Nelson Music arranged by Pippa Murphy 18-28 May 2005, 7.30pm Join the 'rising star of Scottish theatre' (Observer) for a saucy night of soul, sequins and skulduggery. LaToya Levine - 'the toast of Queens' - is the world’s only psychic soul sister. She channels the spirits of singers from Aretha to Cleo, Nina to Tina, and doesn’t care if they’re dead yet or not. We follow LaToya on her comeback tour as she gets over the top, into the groove and back in the spotlight. Along the way she tells stories of stolen afro wigs, dead monkeys, gospel mania, crack-addicted lesbians and even murder. However, she never banked on the disastrous rivalry of Miss Gina from Argentina or the unwelcome ghosts that start clogging up the psychic soul hotline. In David Leddy’s customary style, the show combines slapstick with satire, mashing up the conventions of musical theatre, cabaret and soul music. It makes mischievous comment on the ways that mainstream culture uses white pop stars to perform in a ‘black’ style. This is the follow-up to David’s acclaimed solo shows On The Edge (* * * * A tour de force - The List) and Through The Night (Blissfully different and entertaining theatre - Mail on Sunday). Developed with the support of the Tron. "Momentous... extraordinary... a genuine five-star prickle down the spine" "Captivating" "A corker... funny, touching and bitingly perceptive" "Very entertaining... subtle, complex, strange and inventive" "The empathy comes straight from the heart... Gloriously ambitious... Respect!" | ||||
